The ecstasy of Wilko Johnson

The blurb describes it as a film that “confronts our worst nightmares of impending death, confounding expectations and turning them upside down. It tells the extraordinary, yet universal story of legendary musician Wilko Johnson who, diagnosed with incurable pancreatic cancer and given a few months to live, managed to accept his fate with uplifting positivity to defy the death sentence handed down to him.”

Wilko is an interesting chap, a former teacher of English. He compares teaching to being a rock musician – essentially standing up and making a fool of yourself in front of loads of young people…

Why recommend such a miserable sounding theme at Christmas? Well, it is meant to be a time of quiet reflection as well, and watching an albeit embellished account of one poor chap through his experience is, in our view, quite inspirational. Even the NHS gets some praise from Wilko. Watch it on the BBC iPlayer.
