The West of England Healthcare Innovation Expo 2018

On 14 November 2018 we held our annual conference and exhibition – the West of England Healthcare Innovation Expo. The Expo brought together healthcare providers with local innovators to explore collaboration opportunities and shape the future of our health service. Find out what some of our speakers, leaders and innovators thought of the day.

PReCePT: a mum’s perspective

Elly Salisbury was one of the first mothers to receive magnesium sulphate during preterm labour to reduce the chances of her babies developing cerebral palsy. Here she tells her story and explains why she is keen to support the PReCePT programme, which the AHSN Network is now rolling out across England.

Preventing cerebral palsy in preterm labour (PReCePT)

This film introduces PReCePT, a programme reducing the incidence of cerebral palsy by offering magnesium sulphate to all eligible women in England during preterm labour (less than 30 weeks). Magnesium sulphate costs from just £1 per dose. PReCePT was developed by the West of England AHSN in collaboration with University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, involving both patients and staff. It is now being rolled out nationally through the AHSN Network.

National Early Warning Score (NEWS)

This video tells the story of a patient in North Somerset, who made a quick and full recovery from sepsis as a result of his National Early Warning Score (NEWS) being communicated at every handover of care.

Take Five

This series of five short films was launched at our annual conference in 2017. We have supported numerous innovative projects over the last five years. This collection of films takes a quick look at what we’ve learned about transformation as a healthcare community here in the West of England, as well as looking forward to how we can embed good practice and spread it more widely.

Diabetes Digital Coach

The West of England has been selected as an IoT (internet of things) Test Bed to help people with diabetes in the region self-manage their condition in the future. ‘Diabetes Digital Coach’ is one of seven test beds announced by the NHS around the country as part of a major new drive to modernise how the NHS delivers care.

The habits of an improver

The West of England Academy was delighted when Professor Bill Lucas accepted an invitation to facilitate a workshop with our Improvement Coaches in Swindon. Bill introduced his model ‘The Habits of an Improver’ from a recent paper published by the Health Foundation.


We have developed, OpenPrescribing, a new national online prescribing tool with the support of clinicians and commissioners, which is designed to deliver best possible patient care, whilst saving the NHS money.
