Take Five

This series of five short films was launched at our annual conference in 2017. We have supported numerous innovative projects over the last five years. This collection of films takes a quick look at what we’ve learned about transformation as a healthcare community here in the West of England, as well as looking forward to how we can embed good practice and spread it more widely.

Diabetes Digital Coach

The West of England has been selected as an IoT (internet of things) Test Bed to help people with diabetes in the region self-manage their condition in the future. ‘Diabetes Digital Coach’ is one of seven test beds announced by the NHS around the country as part of a major new drive to modernise how the NHS delivers care.

The habits of an improver

The West of England Academy was delighted when Professor Bill Lucas accepted an invitation to facilitate a workshop with our Improvement Coaches in Swindon. Bill introduced his model ‘The Habits of an Improver’ from a recent paper published by the Health Foundation.


We have developed, OpenPrescribing, a new national online prescribing tool with the support of clinicians and commissioners, which is designed to deliver best possible patient care, whilst saving the NHS money.

Enabling Collaborative Innovation Conference 2015

The Enabling Collaborative Innovation Conference took place in Cheltenham in October 2015 and was attended by more than 400 health and social care professionals from across Gloucestershire, Bristol, Bath and North Somerset. Watch the highlights video below.

Don’t Wait to Anticoagulate

A short video on our Don’t Wait to Anticoagulate project, which aims to increase the use of anticoagulation medicine and improve the management of atrial fibrillation patients.

Supporting Self-management & Self-care

We hosted a one-day event on ‘Supporting Self-management & Self-care’ in North Somerset, bringing together 100 delegates from across healthcare, industry, academia and members of the public. This was an opportunity to learn how people living with long-term health conditions can be supported to develop and increase their levels of knowledge, skills and confidence to manage their own health.

Patient Safety and Quality Improvement in Action

This conference took place in April 2015 in Swindon, and was attended by more than 100 delegates from across the West of England. It was an opportunity for people from our member organisations, patients and members of the public to find out what the Network has been doing in the last year and to showcase the achievements of some of our projects to date.

West of England AHSN Conference 2014

Our first annual conference, in partnership with the NIHR Clinical Research Network, took place in October 2014 at the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol.
