Commissioning evidence-informed care

This programme has strengthened the culture for evidence-informed best practice across our healthcare community. Current spiralling pressures on the NHS demand ways of doing things that ensure waste is limited and value maximised, achieving the right outcomes. Despite 20 years of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) in clinical settings, the NHS has not always been consistent applying and spreading evidence-based practice, resulting in care variations.

This short video from the West of England summarises the why and how of finding and using evidence.

Over the last five years we have worked with healthcare clinicians, managers and commissioners to support access and use of research evidence, developing extra capacity and capability and connecting with experts in using evidence, such as Public Health and NHS Library Services.

Achievements for evidence-informed commissioning:

  • 259 people have been trained on how to find and use evidence to improve the effectiveness of commissioning decisions
  • 19 GP Clinical Evidence Fellows have worked with all 7 of our CCGs over three years
  • An average of 122 users access our evidence toolkit and 278 access our evaluation toolkit every month
  • We have developed 15 case studies, in partnership with CLAHRC West, to showcase best practice in using evidence and evaluation
  • The evaluation online network has 120 members
  • We have developed a Train the Trainer package on ‘finding and using evidence’ and ‘getting started with evaluation’
  • We have provided two Leadership Series events for our local commissioners that provided the opportunity to learn and share around the key priorities of diabetes and also musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions
  • During July 2017 the West of England AHSN led a best practice event on MSK for the South West region, sponsored by NHS England and the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance (ARMA), titled Musculoskeletal Health and Care across the Pathway: A Regional Priority. Over 90 delegates attended and this led to 40 pledges for MSK improvement that have continued beyond the event.
