A new group of HIPsters has successfully graduated from our Health Innovation Programme (HIP) 2021.

The HIP – an intensive, fully-funded course that helps entrepreneurs to develop business propositions with real potential to transform healthcare – delivered ten new graduates this year, bringing its total up to 124.

Innovations being developed, by those successful in securing a place on the 2021 course, were wide ranging and included a non-invasive blood glucose monitoring technology, a specialist provider of mental health and emotional assistance interventions for marginalised communities and a remote physiotherapy service provider who utilises 3D motion sensors.

Delivered in partnership with SETsquared, the global no. 1 university business incubator, the programme aims to test the validity of a company’s business model and teach the participants to understand and explain the value of their proposition to the NHS and health sector.

This year, our programme was co-branded and co-funded with the South West AHSN, and applications were opened up to invite innovators from other South of England AHSN regions, including South West, Kent Surrey Sussex, and Wessex regions. By collaborating in this way, we were able to offer the opportunity to a wider range of innovators and pool the knowledge and expertise of a number of AHSNs.

Historically delivered face-to-face over four full days, the 2021 programme is the second time the course has been delivered virtually, following a successful 2020 adaptation. Spread across five virtual half days (held in the mornings), optional afternoon networking and 1:1 mentor sessions were also available.

Rosie Brown, Innovation and Growth Senior Project Manager at the West of England AHSN, said: “We had 37 applications for this year’s programme, with just 10 places to offer. The successful cohort were extremely engaged and really made the most out of the programme – we’re really excited about their innovation journeys and the potential they have to make impact.”
