The primary aim of the West of England Academy is to increase capacity and capability across our member organisations.

Increasing the use of Improvement Science and tools in order to drive better and safer care supports the wider NHS approach for developing cultures of continuous improvement.

A key element of our strategy is the recruitment and skilling of improvement enthusiasts who can become better able to direct, guide and coach colleagues within their organisation in delivering improvement projects. This will be achieved by training cohorts of local ‘Improvement Coaches’ in latest improvement techniques and encouraging a cross organisation network to support the transfer of knowledge and the adoption and spread of best practice.

Objectives for our Improvement Coach Network

  1. Support the adoption and spread of Quality Improvement across the West of England AHSN through coaching, support and education.
  1. Promote and encourage local ownership and systems for Quality Improvement within organisations and health communities.
  1. Spread and share improvement approaches and achievements through the formation of an active network and community of Improvement Coaches across the West of England AHSN region.
  1. Develop individual coaches through provision of learning resources, participation in educational masterclasses and local networking opportunities.
  1. Promote wider awareness and use of the West of England AHSN improvement learning programme, including online resources, within health communities – through coaches actively promoting and using with teams
  1. Eventually – expand our faculty of improvement experts across the West of England, to inspire, encourage and support more staff to use improvement science and tools in the way they do their daily work.

Overview of programme and network offer

The improvement coach network will be supported and facilitated centrally by the West of England AHSN through the provision of learning resources, educational masterclasses and local networking opportunities.

Our first cohort of 54 Improvement Coaches was nominated by executive sponsors from our member organisations. Their training commences on 1 March 2016. If you work within the West of England AHSN area and would like details of your organisation’s Improvement Coaches, please contact Dave Evans at david.evans@weahsn.net.

We were overwhelmed with the number of applications and have begun planning for a second cohort to start training in the autumn of 2016, with a third cohort planned for 2017.

It is envisaged that the network may include existing Safety Collaborative leads, Q fellows and other improvement fellows currently in West of England AHSN region.
