Innovation funding

We have been successful in securing significant funding for feasibility studies, product development and evaluation.

To make sure that innovation funding is directed at priority areas, we have worked closely with our healthcare providers to identify their key challenges and to connect them with businesses who have the background to provide a solution. We provide funding for these local challenges and gain matched funding from industry partners.

For example, our Diabetes Digital Coach Challenge, where we issued a call for new tools for self-management of diabetes in partnership with our seven Clinical Commissioning Groups, two NHS Acute Trusts and three community providers. We have received 27 applications from international companies, corporates and SMEs, of which four have now been selected for further evaluation.

We have also been the conduit for national challenges such as the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI Healthcare) funded by NHS England to encourage small and medium-sized enterprises to respond to NHS clinical challenges nationally. The SBRI initiative is a three-phased approach which starts with a six-month feasibility phase with an award of up to £100,000 and then moves on to product development and NHS validation, where companies can secure up to £1 million in funding support.

Through SBRI-led challenges we have helped facilitate £5.5m of funding for projects focussed on patient safety, medicines adherence and child and adolescent mental health.

We also provide a Funding Finder, which aims to provide our business and healthcare partners with monthly up-to-date funding opportunities for innovation in health from a range of funders. This includes opportunities from Innovate UK, Department for Business, Innovation & Skills, Horizon 2020 and the National Institute for Health Research.
